Deep Casing Tools commitment to net zero

Today, the oil and gas industry is facing scrutiny as global temperatures rise to the highest level since 1880.   

The rapid growth of renewable energy in the UK and the closure of many coal-fired power stations has cut emissions by more than 70% since 1990, but there is still work to be done.

Action is needed urgently if the oil and gas industry is to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions to reduce global warming and lessen the impact of climate change, reaching a net zero balance.

What is net zero?

Currently, our ecosystem is out of balance due to the amount of greenhouse gases released into our atmosphere daily. The world must work together to remove all man-made gases from our atmosphere to create an equal, net zero balance.

Under the Paris Agreement, the clear objective of net zero has been set. Put simply, this means that net emissions must be reduced to zero to control global temperatures which, in 2020, ranked the second warmest year within the 141-year record and continues to rise. This objective has already been officially acknowledged by countries around the globe, including Scotland who have declared the country will reach net zero emissions by 2045.

The UK is preparing to host the United Nations COP26 Climate Conference in Glasgow in November 2021, where all eyes will be on the efforts being made to turn these pledges into reality.   

Deep Casing Tool’s role in the energy transition

Our innovative technologies across the well life cycle are not only helping global operators reduce emissions on every drilling project, but also locate and access remaining reserves as efficiently as possible.

Our suite of solutions, including the TurboRunner™, TurboCaser™, MechLOK Drill Pipe Swivel, and the SelfLOK Flotation Device, ensure the successful landing of casings and completions to target depth (TD) on the first attempt, resolving age-old downhole problems and related issues around formation, fluid, and hole stability. Our Casing Cement Breaker, the newest addition to our suite of solutions, supports sustainable P&A and slot recovery, removing casing quickly and efficiently.  

By using these tools operators can reduce the risk of failing to land casing on the first attempt, which would result in massive project time delays and rack up significant costs, up to £3M per project. And it’s not just costly; project overrun negatively impacts the environment too. The longer a project is delayed, the more manpower and equipment is required, and therefore more emissions are released.

The impact of our technology

Our customers have recorded that the use of our TurboRunner™, TurboCaser™, MechLOK Drill Pipe Swivel, and the SelfLOK Flotation Device tools, each delivered an average project time saving of at least three days.

Therefore, this allows us to deliver a saving of approximately 900MT of CO2 emissions on an offshore platform, 210MT of CO2 emissions on an offshore semi-submersible platform and 90MT on a land rig, based on a saving of three days per project. When projects run on by weeks, if not months, these savings become considerable. Read on to discover more about our tools.


The TurboRunner is a high-speed, turbine-powered reaming system that enables completions to land to TD and access planned reserves. This transformational tool is 70% more efficient when compared to conventional technology. Its unique design means it can effectively ream through obstructions that other technologies cannot, resulting in fewer wiper trips.

The TurboRunner was successfully used on a Tengiz Chevron Oil (TCO) project. Schlumberger Completions required a de-risked approach to ensure the lower completions could reach TD. Deep Casing Tools was chosen by both TCO and Schlumberger to provide effective reaming tools. The TurboRunner helped eliminate the chance of formation issues that would lead to a completion deployment off TD or having to undertake remedial work then a re-run of the completion. The TurboRunner saved 48 hours of time on this project compared to 74 hours it would have taken for conventional technology. This equates to a total of 60MT CO2 emissions saved. Another high-speed, turbine powered system, the TurboCaser™ is used in well construction to land casings and intermediate liners at TD in even the most complex wells. By reaching TD first time, the solution reduces the risk of pulling and re-running, saving a minimum of three days per drilling project and increasing efficiency by 75% when compared to conventional technology.

The TurboCaser™ tool was recently deployed as part of an ADNOC Offshore extended field trial. Overcoming casing running challenges, the caser ensured production casing was run to depth through unstable formations that have historically proven problematic. The use of the TurboCaser™ successfully saved seven days of rig time and $1million rig spend. In addition, a total of 210MT CO2 emissions were saved on this project, an 87% reduction compared to conventional tools, aligning with ADNOC Offshores 2030 Sustainability Agenda.  

MechLOK Drill Pipe Swivel™

The world’s first mechanically lockable drill pipe swivel, the MechLOK guarantees getting to TD safely on the first attempt. Typically designed for Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) wells, the MechLOK allows the drill pipe to be rotated independently of the work-string resulting in reduced drag, redistributed friction and mitigation of helical buckling. This unique tool can be locked at any time, removes any hydraulic concerns, and reduces the risk of injury during completions by 68% due to the minimum manpower requirement.

As part of an Extended Oil Recovery (EOR) programme, an International Operating Company (IOC) required to workover an existing extended reach horizontal sand face completion to resolve a sand ingress concern which was chocking production. The MechLOK enabled the application additional weight to slide the completion to TD in a tight clearance hole, mitigating the need to pull out of hole, make an additional well bore clean up trip and re-run the completion. This saved three days of rig time, equating to a total emission saving of 210MT of CO2. If you'd like to know more from this project, click here

SelfLOK Flotation Device

The SelfLOK Flotation Device is a one-use device designed to help float liners to TD more cost-effectively. It offers users a reduced drag profile and enables long liner strings to be floated to TD in unconventional ERD wells of the type commonly found in the US land market. The SelfLOK Flotation device saves 90MT CO2 emissions per project on a typical offshore platform by saving three days per project.

The Rubblizer™

Recognising the industry’s need for unique solutions across the well life cycle, in 2019 we expanded our offering into decommissioning with our Rubblizer™ tool. Awarded the ‘Emerging Technology’ award at the Offshore Achievement Awards last year, this tool has the ability to transform both plug and abandonment and slot recovery, improving the efficiency and predictability of cut and pull or perf and squeeze operations.

Using simple pressure and rotation to manipulate the existing casing strings, the Rubblizer™ breaks down the bond between cement and casing, making it easier to remove the casing quickly and efficiently. This avoids the need for costly milling operation and subsequent lost time issues and guarantees pulling success rates.

During early trial runs of the Rubblizer™ with Equinor, we demonstrated a project time reduction of at least ten days compared to the use of alternative, conventional technologies, like perf and wash. By reducing rig time by ten days, emission savings can be made of at least 3,000MT CO2 on an offshore platform, 700MT CO2 on an offshore semi-submersible platform and 300MT CO2 on a land rig.
